About the ECOS N2K Project

ECOS N2K (Environmental Conservation Opportunities and Sport in Natura 2000 sites) is an innovative initiative funded by the Erasmus+ program (ERASMUS-SPORT-2022-SCP). The project focuses on reducing the environmental impact of outdoor sports activities in Natura 2000 sites, ensuring their sustainable use while promoting active lifestyles.

By implementing three pilot projects in different coastal Natura 2000 areas—characterized by sand dunes and unique biodiversity habitats—the project develops a collaborative model that bridges sports associations, environmental experts, and local stakeholders. This cooperation ensures that sports enthusiasts become aware of ecological vulnerabilities while environmentalists better understand the needs of active communities.

Project Objectives

  • Minimize the ecological impact of outdoor sports – developing sustainable solutions for sports activities in Natura 2000 sites.
  • Create a “Charter of Values” and an eco-label – promoting responsible sports practices among local stakeholders, including businesses.
  • Develop training programs – equipping sports operators and enthusiasts with environmental awareness skills.
  • Implement digital solutions – including GPS-mapped eco-friendly sports trails and online educational resources.
  • Ensure accessibility and inclusivity – designing sports routes with special measures for people with disabilities.

Expected Outcomes and Long-Term Impact

  • Sustainable outdoor sports practices – guidelines and best practices to balance physical activity with environmental conservation.
  • Digitized nature-friendly sports routes – GPS-mapped trails with signage and digital guides for responsible tourism.
  • Community engagement – involvement of local stakeholders, ensuring long-term project sustainability.
  • Enhanced digital learning tools – free online courses to spread knowledge about sustainable outdoor sports management.
