Sport That Unites

After several months of intensive work, the Youth for Sport and Society Leadership Programme, implemented under the European Solidarity Corps, is officially coming to an end. The project was an initiative led by young leaders who wanted to demonstrate that sport can be much more than physical activity – it can become an effective tool for building social bonds, fostering community integration, and strengthening local communities.

Sport as a Tool for Community Building

The main objective of the project was to raise awareness of the role sport can play in social inclusion and to equip young people with the knowledge and skills needed to initiate community-based activities through sport.

Throughout the project, participants developed their leadership competencies, explored examples of good practices from across Poland, and took part in a research process focused on sport events that bring local communities together. Particular attention was paid to understanding how sport can connect people of different ages, backgrounds, and needs, and how local sport initiatives can strengthen a sense of belonging and community.

From Research to Practical Recommendations

One of the key elements of the project was conducting research and analysing sport events organised in different parts of Poland. Members of the project team visited local initiatives, spoke with organisers and participants, and identified solutions that effectively support social inclusion through sport.

The findings from these activities were collected and transformed into practical recommendations for people interested in organising their own sport and community events in their local areas.

The “Sport That Unites” Guidebook

The most important outcome of the project is the publication of the guidebook “Sport That Unites. A Practical Guidebook for Local Leaders”, which is now also available on the Institute for Sport Governance website.

The publication was developed for local leaders, non-governmental organisations, sport clubs, schools, local authorities, and anyone interested in using sport to build more active and connected communities. The guidebook takes readers through the entire process of organising an initiative – from identifying community needs, through planning activities, building partnerships and communication strategies, to event delivery and impact evaluation.

The publication also includes examples of good practices, a catalogue of inspiring sport initiatives, and a range of practical tips designed to support the implementation of local community projects.

The Role of the Institute for Sport Governance

The Institute for Sport Governance acted as the supporting organisation throughout the project, providing participants with organisational, mentoring, and substantive support at every stage of implementation.

We are proud to have supported young leaders in developing their ideas and to have witnessed how their commitment translated into concrete actions and meaningful results. The project demonstrated that young people are capable of creating initiatives that respond to real needs within their communities.

Thank You for the Journey

The end of the project also marks the beginning of a new chapter – putting the knowledge, skills, and experiences gained into practice.

We would like to thank all participants, experts, partners, and supporters who contributed to the project at different stages. Thanks to their commitment and dedication, it was possible to create valuable resources and develop solutions that can support future local leaders.

We hope that the “Sport That Unites” guidebook will inspire others to use sport as a tool for positive social change and encourage the development of new initiatives that bring communities together across Poland.

We encourage you to explore “Sport That Unites. A Practical Guidebook for Local Leaders” and use the knowledge and recommendations it contains when planning your own sport and community initiatives.
