Sport for a Sustainable Future. Join the SHARE 2.0 Green Sport Manifesto Movement!
Sport has always been more than just competition on the field. It is a space for building community, fostering social integration, and a powerful force that influences millions of people. Today, this force can be used for an even more noble purpose – protecting the environment and tackling climate change.
During the second SHARE 2.0 conference, a document was presented that has the potential to reshape the way we think about the role of sport in Europe – the Green Sport Manifesto.
Why is the Manifesto needed?
While sport unites people and inspires activity, it also has a significant impact on the natural environment. Sports infrastructure, travel related to events, and the organization of mass gatherings generate emissions, waste, and energy consumption. In the face of European and global climate challenges, the sports sector cannot remain indifferent.
At the same time, sport has a unique ability to inspire change – by showcasing good practices, introducing innovations, and mobilizing communities at every level.
Five commitments for sustainable sport
The Green Sport Manifesto sets out five voluntary yet meaningful commitments. Sports organizations and public institutions that decide to sign it pledge to:
- establish sustainability governance structures,
- create environmental strategies aligned with the European Green Deal,
- measure and report progress annually,
- support cooperation and knowledge-sharing in the field of green sport,
- develop and share tools that support ecological transformation.
These are simple steps, but taken together, they can spark real change across Europe.
The Manifesto as a movement of solidarity
The SHARE 2.0 initiative goes beyond the document itself. It is also a community of practitioners – federations, clubs, municipalities, NGOs, and experts – who share knowledge, experience, and good practices. The Manifesto aims to connect different levels of sport: from major federations and international events to local clubs and grassroots initiatives.
In this way, everyone – regardless of scale – can become part of sport’s green transformation.
Webinar: first experiences and inspiration
To support organizations ready to take on the challenge, SHARE 2.0 is hosting a special webinar on 8 October 2025 (11:00–12:30 CEST). The event will feature the stories of the first Manifesto signatories and provide insights on how to effectively put the commitments into practice.
Registration for the event is already open.
ISG supports the green transition
At the Institute for Sport Governance, we believe that good governance in sport is not only about transparency and professionalism but also about responsibility for the environment and society. That is why we wholeheartedly support the SHARE 2.0 initiative and encourage our partners, friends, and all sports organizations to join the movement.
Sport has always had the power to bring people together. Now it can also become a symbol of solidarity – in the fight for a sustainable future.
