ALLSTARS in San Sebastian – Sport as a Tool to Combat Social Exclusion
ALLSTARS: Inspiring Sports Solutions for People at Risk of Exclusion
Last week, as part of the ALLSTARS project, we visited San Sebastian – a city that serves as a model for promoting sports inclusivity. The aim of the ALLSTARS project is to better understand initiatives that effectively encourage sports participation among groups at risk of exclusion, particularly in urban areas.
Sport for All: An Innovative Sports and Health Complex in San Sebastian
One of the most fascinating examples we had the opportunity to explore is a local initiative created through collaboration between the local government and an organization dedicated to sports for people with disabilities. This cooperation resulted in the development of a modern sports and health complex distinguished by its comprehensive approach to health and physical activity.
What makes this facility unique?
- Combining diagnosis with action – The complex integrates medical diagnosis, professional physiotherapy, and diverse training programs tailored to users’ needs, all within a single facility.
- Open to the community – Particular focus is placed on people with disabilities and groups that rarely benefit from traditional sports offerings.
- Prestigious location – The facility is located right by the city beach, emphasizing its importance and accessibility for the local community.
The Goal of the ALLSTARS Project
The ALLSTARS project is an international initiative funded by the Erasmus+ program and coordinated by the German Sport University Cologne. The project’s objectives include:
- Identifying effective initiatives that promote sports participation in groups at risk of exclusion,
- Collecting best practices from various countries to inspire and implement local solutions,
- Analyzing the needs of groups with lower levels of sports activity and creating solutions tailored to their expectations.
In Poland, we are also gathering information on similar actions, with a focus on initiatives aimed at individuals who have been previously overlooked in sports programs.
Summary
The visit to San Sebastian demonstrated the tremendous impact that can be achieved by combining sports, health, and inclusivity. The sports and health complex stands as a prime example of how cities can tackle social exclusion through innovative infrastructure solutions and collaboration with sports organizations.
The ALLSTARS project is not just a source of inspiration but also a practical opportunity to implement modern sports solutions across Poland and Europe.
We are continuing to work on similar initiatives – stay tuned to learn more about our ongoing projects here!
